About Mary's House
Committed to providing LGBT friendly, safe and affordable
Mary’s House For Older Adults, Inc. is an exciting project to create housing that considers the emotional and relational needs of  lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older people.

This vision began as many of us were navigating residential facilities for our mothers and fathers and seeing first-hand the poor treatment they often faced because they were old. We began to wonder what would have happened to them had they been gay? We started thinking about, “Who will accept and respect us as an old same-gender loving person?”

We have heard story after story of people being discriminated against in nursing homes, retirement communities and by housing professionals because they are LGBT. You may have heard similar stories, where old LGBT people go back into the closet because being gay and being old is too hard. Imagine not being able to live in a friendly residence that honors you and allows you to bring your whole self - home. That’s why Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc. is so important.

Mary’s House is an Alternative Housing Model
Mary's House is being developed in the historic Fort Dupont Park section of Washington, DC and will provide a communal, independent living experience for adults 60 years of age and older. This will be the first facility of its kind in Washington, DC that focuses on the housing and relational needs of its LGBT older adult population. The construction budget is approximated at $800,000.00. The targeted Opening DATE is November, 2015.

Mary's House is committed to helping our community by developing special needs housing that comprehensively addresses affordability and access, and eliminates the constant worry of discrimination or even violence based upon the LGBT status of the individual.  Its intent is to meet the emotional, recreational, social and other similar needs of older adults through health and wellness programming, hydrotherapy, and the coordination of services  housed in a safe, residential space for adults 60 years of age and older.

Anticipated opening date: November 2015.
